Parents & Teachers: Listen to Podcasts

Your students or kids are listening to podcasts. But what are they listening to? What's a podcast, and why has podcasting captured the mindshare of America's youth...and adults?

If you're a parent or teacher, you are duty-bound to find out more about podcasting, if only to understand what it is your kids are listening to! There is a wealth of dubious content out there....and you don't need an iPod to access it! All you need is a computer with a high-speed internet connection, a sound board, and speakers.

If you have these three items, here's your first step: listen to this podcast that tells you what podcasting is and how to subscribe to podcast content. (When you click on the above link, you might have to click on a "play" button -- depending on your player -- to actually hear the content.) The presentation is only 7.5 minutes long, so grab a cup of coffee and have a listen!

PowerPoint and Podcasting: Because I have a PowerPoint related site (www.maniactive.com) -- I initially viewed podcasting as an excellent way to provide narration to online presentations. But podcasting offers much more value than a simple audio for an online PowerPoint presentation. And my content is always G-Rated!

Find out what podcasting is by listening to this podcast today!
Comments:
Do you really think kids are heavy podcast consumers? My high schooler's friends don't have a clue about podcasting. Just a guess, but I think it's mostly a geek thing right now, age-neutral.

I think it's early...and that teenagers are curious by nature, have access to computers and mp3 players, and are a likely age group to actively and enthusiastically seek out podcasts with interesting content.

Podcasts with unique content that teens can't access anywhere else can help even the geekiest teen seem "cool" to his or her peers.

You're right: podcasting has yet to achieve "critical mass", but I'm doing the math -- millions of kids have access to mp3 players and high speed internet access. And parents and teachers might be a tad naive to think that teens are listening only to pop music on their iPods.

Thanks for posting.

Kids don't really need to know anything about podcasting (meaning the RSS aspect) in order to participate. They only need to know how to stream or download mp3's that are being produced as a result of the advent of podcasting. At the outset, this is probably how kids and adults alike will be exposed to podcasts. Eventually, podcatching software will be embedded in browsers, PDAs, cell phones, and mp3 players themsleves; this is where podcasting will really take off.
